Santa Figures

Christmas isn't over until St Nick's visit on Christmas Eve. Decorating with Saint Nicholas figures and decorations is as natural as including a Nativity scene.

So, how old is Santa Claus? Our modern idea of Santa comes from a poem called A Visit From St. Nicholas by Clement-Clark Moore in 1823 as well as advertisements by Coca-Cola. However, St. Nicholas is a real person who was believed to have been born in Myra of Lycia (modern day Turkey) on March 15, 270 CE which makes him over 1750 years old.

Saint Nicholas was a bishop and later declared a saint by the Catholic Church. In the colonial era of the United States, English speaking children learned of Sinterklaas from their Dutch neighbors. Trying to pronounce his name, Santa Claus name evolved to the name we know and love.
